Lead Backend Engineer (ROR)

About the role

Our client, a leading on‑demand grocery delivery platform in the Middle East, is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer (ROR) to join its Lahore team. The role centres on evolving a large Ruby on Rails monolith into a modular, high‑performance system while integrating AI coding agents to accelerate development.

Key responsibilities

• Own the design and delivery of complex backend systems within the Rails platform, from API contracts and data modelling to service decomposition and async patterns.
• Lead the incremental evolution of the monolith, identifying seams, proposing decomposition strategies and executing changes without disrupting live operations.
• Set and enforce technical standards for backend code quality through design reviews and constructive feedback.
• Collaborate with the Staff Engineer on architectural decisions, providing implementation‑level insight.
• Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks, scalability constraints and systemic production issues.
• Take ownership of the AI coding agent setup (Cursor, Claude, Copilot, custom workflows) and continuously improve its speed and integration.
• Build and refine agent workflows for boiler‑plate generation, test coverage, documentation and code‑review scaffolding.
• Develop judgement on AI‑generated output, guiding the team on acceptance, revision or rewrite.

Required profile

• 6‑9 years of backend engineering experience with a strong focus on Ruby on Rails.
• Proven experience building and maintaining large‑scale, high‑availability systems.
• Hands‑on experience with performance tuning and scalability engineering.
• Familiarity with AI‑assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude or Copilot.
• Ability to translate architectural direction into clean, robust code.
