Senior Journalist, Planning & Commissioning

About the role

The Senior Journalist, Planning & Commissioning will lead editorial planning and content commissioning for BBC Urdu across digital, video, social and linear platforms. Working closely with editors, journalists, producers and audience teams, you will shape coverage, develop original story ideas and ensure timely delivery of high‑quality journalism for a diverse Urdu‑speaking audience.

Key responsibilities

• Lead editorial planning and commissioning, aligning coverage with audience needs and editorial priorities.
• Commission and oversee high‑quality content from journalists, correspondents and production teams while maintaining BBC editorial standards.
• Manage editorial calendars, identifying opportunities around breaking news, special events, investigations and explainers.
• Drive innovative, multimedia journalism optimized for digital, social, video and broadcast audiences.
• Use audience insights, performance data and market trends to inform commissioning decisions and maximise reach.
• Collaborate with BBC News teams, Language Services and external partners to strengthen coverage and share resources.
• Champion compliance, inclusion and continuous improvement, ensuring content meets legal, safety and diversity requirements.

Required profile

• Significant journalism experience with a proven track record in editorial planning, commissioning or newsroom leadership.
• Strong editorial judgement and the ability to identify high‑impact stories.
• Excellent knowledge of Pakistan, South Asia and international news.
• Deep understanding of digital journalism, audience engagement and multi‑platform content production.
