Vehicle Technician (Consultant)

About the role

The Vehicle Technician will support the Transport Unit of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan. Working from the Islamabad workshop, the role ensures the UN fleet of light, heavy and armoured vehicles remains safe, reliable and operational through preventive maintenance, fault diagnosis and timely repairs.

Key responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, servicing and repairs on light passenger vehicles, heavy transport trucks and mobile handling equipment according to manufacturer standards and UN policies.
• Diagnose and rectify mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic faults using service manuals and electronic diagnostic tools (OBD II).
• Carry out auto‑body repairs including damage assessment, panel beating, welding, sanding, priming, painting and glass replacement.
• Conduct vehicle recovery operations with specialist equipment and update records in the Electronic Vehicle Management System.
• Prepare cost estimates for expendables, complete Damage Discrepancy Reports and maintain accurate maintenance logs.

Required profile

• Secondary education plus a recognized technical/vocational certificate or diploma in automotive or diesel mechanics.
• Minimum four (4) years of progressive experience maintaining light and heavy 4 × 4 vehicles, with knowledge of automotive electronics and air‑conditioning systems considered desirable.
• Valid driving licence for light and heavy‑duty vehicles.
• Ability to communicate effectively in Urdu; working knowledge of English is highly desirable.

Required skills

• Engine tune‑up and overhaul.
• Hydraulic brake system service.
• Cooling, fuel and steering/suspension maintenance, including wheel alignment.
• Use of electronic diagnostic tools and OBD II analysis.
• Auto‑body repair techniques: panel beating, welding, painting and refinishing.
• Vehicle recovery and operation of specialist recovery equipment.
