Senior Software Developer - VB6 Desktop Team

About the role

Contour Software, a subsidiary of Constellation Software Inc., is hiring a senior developer for its Desktop team. The team owns the current desktop products, Windows applications built on Visual Basic 6 (VB6) and COM that customers rely on every day, while CalcAir builds modern web versions of them. This is a lasting senior role for an engineer who knows VB6 deeply and uses AI tools to understand, document and safely improve existing code, helping plan the path from VB6 to the web.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the technical work on VB6 desktop products, including defect fixes, enhancements and releases, and act as the senior technical resource for hard problems and critical customer issues.
• Keep products stable, supportable and documented for as long as customers depend on them.
• Find and fix slow, manual or error-prone steps in the build, test and release process, and improve how GitHub and Azure DevOps are used.
• Use Claude Code to automate repetitive work in analysis, testing and documentation, and turn successful practices into shared team habits.
• Analyze VB6 code to map workflows and extract business rules, write characterization tests, and work with Product on which rules carry forward to the web.
• Review AI-generated changes carefully, especially in code with little test coverage, and help the team use AI safely on legacy code.
• Work in GitHub and Azure DevOps, partner with Infrastructure & IT on builds and releases, mentor team members and document what you learn.

Required profile

• 6+ years of professional software development, including substantial production work in VB6.
• Deep understanding of Windows desktop application architecture, data access and VB6 debugging.
• Strong working knowledge of the COM model, ActiveX components, the Windows registry and how legacy 32-bit apps behave on modern Windows.
• Daily hands-on use of Claude Code or a comparable agentic coding tool, with examples you can show.
• Track record of improving team processes such as build, test and release steps.
• Senior-level judgment: weighing risk, explaining trade-offs to non-technical leaders and knowing when to wait.
