Chief AI Officer

About the role

The Chief AI Officer is a founding executive position at the Pakistan Digital Authority, reporting directly to the Chairperson and working alongside the Chief Data Officer. This senior role combines AI regulatory supervision with the development of a national AI use‑case strategy to transform government services across the country.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the creation of Pakistan’s National AI Governance Framework, covering risk classification, algorithmic accountability, transparency, and prohibited uses.
• Own AI regulatory instruments under the Digital Nation Pakistan Act, including AI use policies, audit frameworks, and conformity assessment protocols for high‑risk systems.
• Establish and convene the National AI Advisory Council with stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, and industry.
• Define Pakistan’s sovereign AI infrastructure strategy, addressing national compute resources, foundational models, and supply‑chain resilience.
• Build and manage the government AI use‑case portfolio, prioritising high‑impact applications in health, justice, education, taxation, social protection, and public safety.
• Design an AI maturity assessment framework for federal ministries and lead national AI readiness diagnostics.
• Drive AI talent and capability development in partnership with higher‑education institutions and the technology sector.
• Recruit and lead an AI Division comprising policy specialists, applied engineers, and research staff.

Required profile

• Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in AI/ML, technology strategy, or technology policy, with significant leadership tenure.
• Deep understanding of AI governance principles such as risk‑based classification, algorithmic accountability, explainability, fairness, and AI safety.
• Proven track record of leading AI strategy at an organisational or national level, focusing on governance and policy architecture.
