Environmental Safeguards Specialist

About the role

SMEC invites expressions of interest for an Environmental Safeguards Specialist position based in Hyderabad, Pakistan. The role calls for a senior environmental professional to lead environmental safeguards, sustainability, assessments, compliance, biodiversity and climate resilience, ensuring high-quality delivery in line with international standards and industry best practice. The successful candidate will work with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to integrate environmental considerations across planning, design, procurement, implementation and monitoring.

Required profile

• Master's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, ecology, natural resources management, sustainability or a related discipline from a recognised institution.
• At least 20 years of relevant environmental experience, including at least 12 years on major infrastructure, environmental management or sustainable development projects.
• Experience preparing and reviewing environmental assessments, management plans, compliance frameworks and risk mitigation measures.
• Experience in environmental due diligence, biodiversity and ecosystem assessments (including wetlands, mangroves and coastal habitats) and stakeholder consultation.
• Proven ability to coordinate with clients, contractors, government agencies, communities and multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience on projects funded by international development agencies, donors or multilateral financial institutions is highly desirable.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, international standards, sustainability frameworks and best practices.
• Experience integrating environmental and sustainability requirements across infrastructure planning, design, procurement and implementation.
• Experience in environmental monitoring, mitigation, climate adaptation, ecosystem management and reporting.
• Strong analytical, communication, report-writing and stakeholder engagement skills.
