Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

Sportech is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, scale, and maintain high‑throughput, mission‑critical distributed systems that serve millions of concurrent users across its sports engagement platform.

Key responsibilities

• Architect resilient, low‑latency microservices in Go to handle peak traffic during live events.
• Build and optimise real‑time data ingestion pipelines, WebSocket/SSE engines, and event streams for match processing and analytics.
• Design double‑entry wallet/ledger architectures, token economies and payment pipelines with strict consistency and auditability.
• Own database modelling, sharding, partitioning and query optimisation in high‑load PostgreSQL environments.
• Enforce security standards across identity (OAuth 2.0/OIDC), PII protection and compliance (PCI‑DSS, SOC 2, KYC).
• Implement distributed tracing, metrics and alerting to maintain 99.99% availability.
• Lead design reviews, drive best practices and mentor intermediate engineers.

Required profile

• 5+ years of production experience with large‑scale distributed systems handling high QPS and millions of users.
• Deep mastery of Go concurrency, memory management and profiling.
• Proven expertise with advanced PostgreSQL features and zero‑downtime migrations.
• Extensive experience with message brokers/event streaming (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis Streams) and real‑time protocols (WebSocket, SSE, gRPC).
• Strong foundation in security, authentication and compliance standards.
