CAD Automation Engineer – 2D-to-3D Geometry Reconstruction (Python & JavaScript)

About the role

We develop software that automates CAD workflows for engineering and fabrication. The core product converts 2D manufacturing drawings (DWG/DXF) into precise, dimension‑faithful 3D models that can be viewed directly in a browser. You will own the end‑to‑end geometry pipeline, from parsing raw CAD files to generating clean mesh data for web rendering.

Key responsibilities

• Parse DWG/DXF files in Python (using ezdxf or similar) to extract contours, holes, bend lines, annotations, and layer classifications.
• Transform 2D drawings into accurate 3D geometry, including sheet‑metal fold/unfold reconstruction, extrusions, and assemblies.
• Generate mesh data (vertices, indexed faces, correct normals and winding) for Three.js/WebGL viewers.
• Handle noisy, real‑world CAD input deterministically with tolerance‑based vertex merging, degenerate region handling, and unit normalization.
• Implement numeric validation checks (dimensional, planarity, topology) to catch geometry errors programmatically.
• Integrate geometry engines into Python backend services (FastAPI or similar) and support the JavaScript viewer layer.
• Write regression tests using synthetic and real drawing fixtures.

Required profile

• 3+ years of experience in computational geometry, CAD/CAM software, or geometry‑heavy engineering applications.
• Proven track record converting 2D CAD drawings to accurate 3D models, with concrete examples of fold/unfold logic or CAD‑kernel work.
• Strong analytical mindset with a numeric, invariant‑driven approach to debugging geometry.

Required skills

• Python (numpy, Shapely, ezdxf or equivalent)
• Computational geometry libraries (Open CASCADE, CGAL, trimesh, CADquery)
• JavaScript integration experience, especially Three.js (BufferGeometry, coordinate conventions)
• FastAPI or Flask for backend services
• Understanding of 3D fundamentals: transforms, mesh topology, normals, winding
• Experience with handling messy DWG/DXF files and unit/coordinate normalization
