Bookkeeper - VAT Margin Scheme (Remote)

About the role

Motorology, an independent car dealership in Prescot, UK, is hiring a full-time remote bookkeeper to manage day-to-day bookkeeping, financial reconciliations, VAT records and monthly management reporting. The role goes beyond routine bookkeeping: it involves investigating discrepancies, analysing financial performance and giving management reliable financial information. Working hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM UK time (40 hours per week), with a salary of PKR 45,000 to 80,000 per month depending on experience.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain accurate bookkeeping records and record and categorise vehicle purchases, sales, income and expenses.
• Complete bank and credit card reconciliations and manage sales and purchase ledgers.
• Process and reconcile supplier invoices and payments, and monitor outstanding customer and supplier balances.
• Reconcile customer payments, finance company settlements and other third-party transactions.
• Prepare VAT records, including VAT Margin Scheme calculations and supporting documentation.
• Assist with payroll information and liaise with external accountants.
• Investigate and resolve discrepancies, unusual transactions and accounting errors.
• Prepare and review monthly management reports: profit and loss, balance sheets, cash flow forecasts, gross profit, vehicle sales performance, operating expenses, bank balances, VAT position and month-on-month comparisons, and explain significant movements to management.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years of bookkeeping experience.
• Proven practical experience with the VAT Margin Scheme for second-hand vehicles; applications without this will not be considered.
• Experience preparing monthly management accounts or financial reports.
• Strong understanding of bookkeeping, bank reconciliations, ledgers and VAT.
• Ability to explain financial figures and variances clearly in English.
• Advantageous: experience in the motor trade, vehicle dealerships or other high-volume transaction businesses.

Required skills

• Accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks or similar.
• Monthly profit and loss reporting.
• Analytical skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently.
