Security Officer

About the role

The Security Officer provides technical, operational and advisory support to protect UNOPS personnel, assets and operations. Working within the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS), the role ensures that all activities comply with global security standards, local regulations and organisational policies.

Key responsibilities

• Reinforce security risk management across all UNOPS projects and operations.
• Assist the Field Security Advisor in conducting Security Risk Assessments (SRAs) and developing mitigation plans.
• Integrate security considerations into project planning, budgeting and implementation.
• Advise project teams on local threats, vulnerabilities and protective measures.
• Develop, implement and review office and project‑specific Security Plans, Residential Security Measures and contingency arrangements.
• Contribute to business continuity planning from a security perspective and support regular BCP drills.
• Review project proposals for security implications, conduct field assessments and recommend improvements.
• Coordinate with UNDSS and other UN agencies for information‑sharing, compliance and crisis response.
• Implement UNOPS and UNSMS security policies, adapting them to the local operating context.
• Plan, coordinate and oversee security operations for official missions, site visits and high‑level events.

Required profile

• Proven experience in security risk management and incident response.
• Familiarity with the United Nations Security Management System and related UN security policies.
• Ability to conduct security risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.
• Strong advisory skills to guide project teams on security matters.
• Experience coordinating with UN agencies such as UNDSS.
