Software Engineer (Edge - Networking & Fleet) - Remote

About the role

Zyte is a remote-first company that builds web data platforms, including its Edge platform which uses a residential network of real devices to fetch the web. The Edge Platform squad owns the control plane and data plane of this residential stack across Windows, Android and Linux. You will design and operate the Fleet Manager, a control plane with provider adapters, a reconciler, rollout control and metrics export, and handle scheduling, networking, proxying and reliability. You will work directly with the Team Lead, a Principal Engineer, and partner squads.

Key responsibilities

• Scale the data plane: evolve CNC from a single-replica service into a horizontally scalable fetch scheduler at 50-100M requests per day, respecting geo, site cooldowns, jail and per-peer quotas
• Build the Fleet Manager control plane: inventory, health, configuration and software-rollout plane with provider adapters, a reconciler, a rollout controller and an exporter to BigQuery
• Operate and improve the CONNECT proxy gateway and session handling, and work with the API squad on IP reputation, proxy leases and request scheduling
• Engineer networking: mTLS gRPC, long-poll and streaming over unreliable residential links, NAT and carrier-grade NAT, and bandwidth accounting under contention
• Define SLOs for availability, success and latency, build metrics on peer count, drop-off and bandwidth, and run blue/green rollouts of CNC and peers
• Take part in the on-call rotation, lead incident post-mortems and write RFDs for scheduling, fleet management and failover

Required profile

• 5+ years of production Rust experience, shipping and operating services end to end
• Distributed systems experience: schedulers, control planes or stateful services at scale, with consistency, partitions, backpressure and idempotency
• Deep networking knowledge: TCP, TLS, HTTP, gRPC, long-lived connections across NAT and lossy links
• Proxy expertise: forward proxies, proxy gateways or residential/ISP proxy infrastructure, IP reputation and session stickiness
• Ops and reliability experience: SLOs, error budgets, observability, production incidents and on-call
• Comfort with Rust on Windows, Linux and Android, and with FFI boundaries
• Strong written communication in a globally distributed, remote-first setting
