Software Engineer – International Publishing Platform

About the role

Meridian Review Group, an international publishing, research and intelligence group, is looking for a Software Engineer to help build the technology behind a network of business, markets and economic publications. The role is hands-on and builds new products rather than maintaining old ones. It can be fully remote or based in London, Prague or Costa Rica, as a full-time position or a long-term contract, with expected pay of $9,000-$12,000 per month depending on experience.

Key responsibilities

• Build new reader-facing products and features, and improve the shared publishing platform
• Build infrastructure for launching new publications and tools for journalists, editors and researchers
• Develop structured company, executive and economic databases, market-data infrastructure and stock and company information products
• Build APIs, data pipelines and integrations with external financial and economic datasets
• Develop ranking and index products, search and research functionality, and technical SEO and Core Web Vitals improvements
• Build entity-based internal linking, automated publishing workflows and monitoring tools for data freshness and accuracy
• Help prepare the platform for 10 million monthly visitors, with attention to performance, caching, database and API performance, scalability and observability
• Work closely with editors and researchers on research, data and information products, and on the architecture of the underlying platform

Required profile

• Has built real production software used by real users
• Comfortable moving between frontend and backend problems and understanding unfamiliar codebases quickly
• Cares about performance, reliability and maintainability, and thinks about scale
• Enjoys solving ambiguous problems and explaining technical trade-offs to non-engineers
• Comfortable working asynchronously with an internationally distributed team
• No prior experience in a newspaper or media organisation needed; experience with SaaS, research, financial, data or content products is valued
