Chemical Engineer – Process Development (Pharma)

About the role

We are seeking a Chemical Engineer to join our process development team in Karachi. The role focuses on developing, scaling, and producing pharmaceutical intermediates and APIs in a GMP‑compliant environment. You will work closely with production, QA, and R&D to ensure safe and efficient chemical manufacturing.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, optimise and scale chemical synthesis routes and unit operations for API and intermediate production.
• Prepare and review process flow diagrams (PFDs), mass and energy balances, and standard operating procedures.
• Conduct process hazard analyses and risk assessments (HAZOP, HIRA) and implement safety controls.
• Troubleshoot process deviations, yield losses and impurity issues in collaboration with QA and analytical teams.
• Select equipment, run pilot trials and manage technology transfer from R&D to manufacturing.
• Monitor process performance and lead continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Experience in process development, scale‑up and pilot‑plant operations within pharmaceutical or fine‑chemical manufacturing.
• Knowledge of GMP, process safety and chemical hazard control measures.
• Strong documentation and change‑control practices for regulated environments.
• Preferred: Master’s degree or professional training in pharmaceutical process development.

Required skills

• Reaction engineering and unit operations.
• Process simulation tools such as ASPEN, MATLAB and advanced Excel.
• Preparation of mass/energy balances, PFDs and SOPs.
• Process safety analyses (HAZOP, HIRA).
• GMP compliance and chemical hazard control.
• Analytical techniques for impurity control and collaboration with QC labs.
• Pilot‑plant operation and technology transfer.
