Software Engineer (Edge - Devices & Mobile) - Remote

About the role

Zyte is a remote-first company that extracts web data at scale, and its Edge platform uses a custom residential network of real devices to fetch data from sites that block other methods. The Edge Platform squad manages the control plane and data plane of this stack, and is expanding from Windows into Android devices on mobile networks and self-hosted Linux. This role is the lead engineer making the peer run smoothly across platforms, binding Rust to native network stacks and OS APIs via FFI.

Key responsibilities

• Build the cross-platform peer runtime in Rust for Windows, Android, Linux and eventually macOS, handling process lifecycles, background tasks, networking and automatic updates.
• Port the peer to Android using NDK/JNI, integrating real and emulated device farms into the fleet.
• Integrate the Chromium network stack (Cronet, C++) and browserless HTTP clients as tested Rust libraries.
• Gather hardware and OS fingerprint data from the fleet and share it with the Browser and Antiban teams.
• Build per-device metrics on uptime, drop-off rates, bandwidth and success rates.
• Add peer-level support for tasks such as captcha solving and browser rendering, while keeping the peer isolated from untrusted pages.
• Join the on-call rotation, run post-mortems and author RFDs and architectural reviews.

Required profile

• 5+ years of production Rust experience, shipping and maintaining software end-to-end.
• Cross-platform Rust on at least two platforms (Windows, macOS or Android), with at least one mobile platform.
• Comfortable with FFI, including JNI/NDK, Win32 and POSIX, and cross-language threading.
• Deep knowledge of TCP, TLS and HTTP at the packet level, and a reliability-first, security-conscious approach.
• Excellent written communication for a distributed, remote-first team.

• Infrastructure: GCP, Kubernetes, Valkey, BigQuery, blue/green deployments
• Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, OpenTelemetry
• Nice to have: residential network experience, browser internals, distributed systems, web scraping, open source contributions
