SMS Routing Engineer – International A2P Messaging

About the role

The SMS Routing Engineer designs, operates, monitors and optimises international SMS routing across hundreds of mobile operators, aggregators, SMS hubs and CPaaS partners. The role ensures high delivery rates, low latency, cost‑effective routing and compliance with SLAs while protecting the network from fraud and grey routes.

Key responsibilities

• Configure and maintain international SMS routing tables, LCR and quality‑based routing strategies, and priority/failover policies.
• Manage carrier‑hosted SMS‑FW and OTT‑FW services, investigate revenue leakages, and act as technical lead on related projects.
• Monitor supplier performance metrics (delivery rate, latency, TPS, etc.) and recommend routing changes.
• Optimize traffic based on cost, quality, regulations and customer SLAs.
• Support carrier integration, onboarding new operators, aggregators and CPaaS providers.
• Prevent SMS fraud by monitoring pumping, grey routes, SIM farms and spam campaigns.
• Participate in 24×7 incident management, root‑cause analysis and preventive actions.

Required profile

• 3–7 years of experience in international A2P messaging and SMS routing.
• Hands‑on experience with Tier‑1 carriers or global aggregators and high‑volume message traffic.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and incident‑management skills.
• Ability to work with cross‑functional teams including carrier relations, NOC, product and finance.

Required skills

• SMPP, SS7, SIGTRAN, MAP, SMSC platforms, SMS firewalls, routing engines.
• Linux, SQL, Wireshark, TCP/IP.
• Diameter, IMS/VoLTE messaging, RCS, WhatsApp Business APIs, CPaaS architecture.
• Experience with platforms such as OpenMarket, Mitto, GMS, Infobip, Twilio, Sinch, Tata Communications, Route Mobile, LINK Mobility, SAP Digital Interconnect, BICS, Tata SMS Hub.
• Hands‑on with SMPP simulators, SMS analyzers, Grafana, Kibana, Prometheus, Nagios, Zabbix.
