Principal Software Engineer - Backend

About the role

Dubizzle Labs is expanding its Pakistan office, which already has more than 400 colleagues, and is looking for a Principal Software Engineer (Backend). The role focuses on building a high-quality engineering environment and delivering value to customers, with the aim of supporting the growth of the business across 10 countries.

Key responsibilities

• Gather an up-to-date, in-depth understanding of the codebase and technology stack within weeks
• Lead planning sessions for new product features and deliver detailed rollout and rollback strategies for releases
• Research and apply industry trends in daily work
• Create unit tests according to established standards and write and maintain code following the company's programming practices
• Contribute to post-release maintenance issues and develop elegant solutions for complex problems
• Pioneer the reliability and efficiency of current codebases, platforms and core systems, and influence the technical vision of the stream
• Mentor peers in a peer-programming environment and guide them on tasks of any complexity
• Review major pull requests, define programming standards and give constructive feedback
• Design and deliver multiple REST-based APIs, with prior exposure to service-oriented architecture
• Push back on incomplete requirements, handle the full software development lifecycle end to end, and lead product planning meetings while architecting solutions

Required profile

• 8+ years of professional backend software engineering experience
• Experience with cloud-hosted infrastructure and technologies; AWS preferred
• Prior experience with Kubernetes and Docker earns bonus points
• Experience on high-traffic, large-scale web products is preferred
• Experience with web infrastructure, SOA, distributed systems, performance analysis and search infrastructure
• Has been on at least one "death march" project and knows what to avoid

Required skills

• Python preferred
• Strong understanding of design patterns, including asynchronous programming, queuing, logging, security and persistence
• Mastery of caching layers and strategies such as memcached
• Understanding of build process management and continuous integration
• Mastery of testing methodologies (unit, component, integration tests)
